Dear Parents,

The class started our day off with an all school assembly in the gym. We love our assemblies as they bring the school together in a shared environment of joy. We begin by singing the Baker song and then hear announcements about what different classes and school groups are doing. The first graders love watching their older school mates negotiate this communal gathering.

In Language Arts, we read our weekly poem, worked with our word sort words, read independently and paired up during writer’s workshop to share insights into our writing. In math, we learned about notational symbols. We are still working with money, so please continue to discuss monetary amounts with your children. We also participated in P.E., Spanish, and Music. Oh, and the most important part of our day was spending time running and playing outside on this warm and sunny day.

Today’s vlog features an interview with Brian Hagy. Mr. Hagy is Baker’s Information Systems Manager. He is responsible for keeping our inter-office phone system, computers and other technology in working order. Baker’s web site looks fantastic because of all the work he does. There have been many occasions when our class has had to call Mr. Hagy to help us with some technological problem. The kids know him as the man who keeps our Eno board working when Ms. Makagon messes it up.

Reminder: There is no school on Wednesday due to parent/teacher conferences.

Have a great weekend,

Melissa and Lisa

Dear Parents,

Today a leprechaun visited our classroom. This little sprite created havoc in our room by knocking over chairs, throwing cushions across the room and leaving sparkling green footsteps across the classroom floor. I managed to catch hold of the creature for a moment and then poof! I was left with a pot of gold. We decided to make traps in case the leprechaun decided to return for the gold. Enjoy the images of our very busy day.

We also interviewed Ms. Fisher, our school librarian. Ms. Fisher has been at Baker for two years and has wowed us with many exciting stories. Ms. Fisher loves to recommend books that will encourage children to explore new worlds through the written word and is energized by opportunities to read engrossing stories to our children. She keeps our imaginations alive at Baker.

Best,

Melissa and Lisa

Dear Parents,

Today we are interviewing Moncina Jackson. Moncina is the voice you hear on the phone when you call and the smiling face you see when you enter the front office. She is always calm, kind and collected. Moncina is someone to truly be admired. She adds so much to our daily lives and we are so lucky to have her. By the way, be sure to ask her about her amazing children the next time you see her.

Best,

Melissa and Lisa

Dear Parents,

Yeah! The sun showed her glowing face and made us all walk with a bounce, skip and hop to our steps. It was, as always, a busy day. We continued with our normal routines and further explored the United States through our unit on Tall Tales. The children worked with their reading groups, wrote what they had discovered about the dime and supported our friends in first grade 1B by watching their opening performance in A Midsummer’s Night Dream. We are all very excited about our show on Saturday night.

Today, we interviewed Senora Marguerite, our lovely maestra de espanol. Senora’s knowledge and  multi-dimensional approach to teaching is a wonderful addition to the Baker faculty. Her gentle manner and beautiful spirit make Spanish class a joy to attend.

Have a great weekend,

Melissa and Lisa

Dear Parents,

Today we are interviewing Nurse Meg Egan. Nurse Egan is the person we go to when we have a tummy ache or bonk our heads. She soothes our hurts with gentle expertise and keeps her eyes and ears open for all new health related information. She helps us keep our body’s strong and healthy! Yeah Meg!

Enjoy your evening,

Melissa and Lisa

Dear Parents,

In today’s vlog, the children interview Nancy Perla our Extended Care Director. Nancy does an amazing job running our after-school program. She does such a fantastic job that the children beg to be able to attend Extended Care. In the interview, we learn that Ms. Perla used to work for a company that made video games and she even got to spend her day playing them. I bet this will inspire a lot of “When I grow up I want to be…” statements.

We spent the day talking about what makes a great interview. The children agree that they should look at the person they are interviewing and show interest in the interviewee’s responses. Also, they felt that they should have some good questions prepared to ask in advance. Tomorrow’s discussion will be about what kinds of questions allow for a full response. It is amazing to see through this vlogging process just how much the children have grown and how much more poised they are in front of the camera.

Tomorrow night is our first performance of A Midsummer’s Night Dream. Remember to have your children at the school and checked into Ms. Buehler’s room at 6:30PM. Children should arrive at school wearing their blue pants. We will hand out their shirts in the room. If you plan to watch the show with your child, you must purchase a ticket for yourself and your child.

Thank you,

Melissa and Lisa

Dear Parents,

We are trying to go in a new direction with our daily vlog. For the next few weeks, children will be interviewing the faculty and staff at Baker in order to introduce you to the adults with whom we come in contact during our day. The children are excited and have a lot of questions about these adults and what they do. These interviews will help us with our writing (what makes a good story? How do you write a good question?) reading and public speaking. And of course, they are just plain fun.

Our first interview is with Jackie Haug, Baker’s Instructional Coordinator. Mrs. Haug was formerly an outstanding fourth/fifth grade looping teacher (she taught my daughter last year), and has stepped into a different role this year. We love her!

Enjoy,

Melissa and Lisa

Dear Parents,

Today we heard a Pirate story from Ms. Fisher, “Arrrgh” and then proceeded to work cooperatively to build the skeleton of our pirate ship. Many thanks to Vivian Hanson for her help in the ship building. I have not shown you the finished project because… well, it is not finished. More to come on the blog.

We also enjoyed our first dress rehearsal for the Middle-School Production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This is just a taste of what is to come. Don’t the children look scrumptious? Has this tempted you? Please remember that if you would like to see the whole production, you need to purchase a ticket for yourself and your child. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you might have about the performance or your child’s role. Also, no child will be placed in the uncomfortable position of performing if they do not wish to be on stage… even with last minute jitters.

Reminder: Sign up for a conference date on-line. Please see me to arrange another date if you are unable to make your child’s conference at this time.

Thank You,

Melissa and Lisa
