Saturnalia 2008!
December 17th, 2008 by rcrownSaturnalia was a popular Roman winter solstice celebration. The celebration revolved around a festival for Saturn, the god of sowing seed, and Ops, the goddess of abundance. During the holiday, the festival revolved around gift-giving and role reversal: Masters became slaves, slaves became masters, gambling was permitted, and common gifts were small, terracotta figurines or beeswax candles. The festive meals included delicacies like dormice sprinkled with honey and poppy seeds. In fact, the dormice were fattened for two weeks ahead of time to ensure their taste! Hence, the 6s, 7s, and 8s made their very own dormice in honor of Saturnalia. Ask your child about the ingredients!

Latin Happening 2008
November 21st, 2008 by rcrownSalus in mundo antiquo! November
The Latin Happening is an interdisciplinary, multi-age, experiential project. Each year the Latin Happening is centered around one general theme related to the culture and history of the Ancient World. Past Latin Happenings have featured Ancient Cartography, Roman Comedy and Laughter, Roman Architecture, Pompeii and more.
In this year’s Latin Happening we are exploring Salūs in Mundō Antiquō (“Health in the Ancient World”) in the two days before Thanksgiving break. To do so, students will be studying movement of water in ancient cities, building a replica of an aqueduct, studying transmission of disease and its impact on population, creating amulets and votive offerings to the gods in search of protection and cure, creating puppet characters, and finally creating puppet theatre which reflects their experience over the two days.
We are hoping students come away from this event with a better understanding of Ancient Roman medical practice, both preventative and curative, health and sanitation, and the transmission of contagious disease in both the ancient and contemporary worlds.

What’s new?
October 20th, 2008 by rcrownSpecial activities in the Latin program will be featured in this section. Stay tuned for our Halloween activities next week! Laetus Dolus aut Donum!!
